Of the 17 departments that make Paraguay, Central is the most populated one with almost two million inhabitants. As such, expect to make a lot of friends when exploring the region. Its capital, Aregua, lies between Ypacarai Lake and rolling hills, making it an ideal pit stop for those looking to experience the city’s outdoors. Geologic attractions near the city include Koi Hill, known for its formations of hexagonical sandstone. These stones were declated a “natural monument” in 1993, making the hill a protected heritage site. Aregua is also home to colonial architecture, and a simple stroll through its cobblestone streets will easily acquaint you with them, and many markets that offer luscious strawberries. That’s right; Aregua is considered the “City of Strawberries,” so expect to give your stomach a treat in the city.
