There is plenty to do in the surrounding area. Queens Park in Invercargill is a very well-maintained public park that also incorporates a botanical garden, which exhibits some of New Zealand's best flora. The Park also contains the Southland Museum and Art Gallery which displays a living fossil - the Tuatara - one of the worlds rarest and strangest prehistoric reptiles. Fiordland National Park is a prime destination for trout fishing, boating, hunting, hiking and bird watching. It contains the glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford Sound which offer scenic boat trips. The Park also has some of New Zealand's Great Walks such as the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Tracks. It is possible to do guided day walks on these famous tracks which wind through craggy mountains and forested glades.

The nearby Mavora Lakes Conservation Area was the backdrop for the filming of the Lord of the Ring films. It has an eclectic mix of scenery, including glaciers, towering mountain peaks, remote wilderness, glassy lakes and meandering river valleys. It is an excellent destination for birdwatchers, hikers and fly fishing enthusiasts.

Southland is most famous for its brown trout fishery, considered to be among the best in the world. Some 35 rivers, lakes, and streams are within one hours drive from Lumsden. Big brown trout sitting in crystal clear aqua blue water set the scene for many international travelers to test their casting, landing and stalking skills. Plentiful river access points are available for the Oreti, Mataura, Aparima, Waikaia, Mararoa Rivers which are only a short drive from Lumsden. The middle sections of the Oreti River are only a short walk from the rental. The Oreti is a classical braided river with multiple branches of aqua blue water twisting and winding over polished glacial pebbles. It is home to rising trout, ducks and the endangered Black Billed Gull.

Lumsden is a resting point for cyclists undertaking the 5 days Around the Mountains Cycle Trail. This is one of New Zealand's most picturesque tracks as it follows gently carved railway easements through green farmland, along pretty rivers, and under snow-capped mountains.

Lumsden has a well-stocked supermarket, pharmacy, three cafes, and a local Pub. There is an excellent antique store that stocks a wide range of goods, including furniture, jewelry and lots of interesting trinkets. Five Finger Crafts and Lumsden Information Center hosts displays from local artists, home-made clothing, and knitted goods. Lumsden is also the home to the award-winning Gathered Game Company which makes handcrafted premium wild venison salami and deer sticks. A comprehensive Fly Fishing Shop at 38 Diana Street sells all the necessary equipment for a happy day fishing on the local rivers. An antique and curio shop in nearby Riverdale owned by Lizzy and Wayno should be called a museum for all its eclectic goods. Invercargill has the Bill Richardson Transport World, which is the largest collection of its type in the world. There are over 200 trucks, as well as a wide variety of vintage vehicles, including Ford Model Ts.
