Originally established in 1881 as a railroad town, Kountze, Texas was named after financial backers of the Sabine and and East Texas Railroad. 89 percent of the area is covered by thick, lush forest, and Kountze refers to itself as the “Big Light in the Big Thicket.” The thicket refers to a vast area of tangled trees, marshy lands, and numerous streams, which are now partially protected by the Big Thicket National Preserve. This is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world outside of the tropics, so visitors will see plenty of wildlife and vegetation. Also see the sights in the nearby Sam Houston National Forest for some time by the water and more.
